Lancashire Pub Celebrates a Famous Pie Victory

A Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company pub has scooped a tasty prize for its mouth-watering steak and ale pie – with a little culinary help from Jus-Rol™ Professional.

The Steak and Theakston’s Ale pie, which was prepared by chef, Ian Armitage, from The Woolpack pub in Haslingden, Lancashire, was victorious in the first Rawtenstall Annual Fair pie competition staged recently.

Ian used Jus-Rol Professional’s Shortcrust Pastry Sheets for his prize-winning creation which was praised by the judges for the quality of its pastry and beat several other entries to the inaugural prize.

Judge Hervey Magnall said: “It had the nicest pastry – it was full of flavour, it had just enough gravy in it and tasted very good.”

Lessee, David Murray, who was later presented with the town’s first pie prize by the Mayor of Rawtenstall, said of the winning pie: ”We use top quality local beef cooked in a blend of Theakston Ales to ensure the meat is really tender and has a beautiful rich taste. The ale flavoured meat juices given off from this slow cooking of the meat also create delicious gravy for the pie filling. The Jus-Rol pastry is convenient, easy to use and gives a very good quality to finish off the pie.”

As well as impressing the judges at the annual fair, the steak and ale pie has also become established as one of the stars of the pub’s popular gourmet pie menu.
