Shape It Up - Soulinnis
The café industry is becoming increasingly competitive, with pubs just as likely to offer Afternoon Tea as they are your favourite tipple! As the differences between the sectors blur, how can café operators set themselves apart from the competition? One coffee shop in Leatherhead, Surrey, may have found the answer...
After taking over Soulinnis just 18 months ago, Karen Rogers has built its reputation for quality, made-to-order offerings, including a huge selection of fresh salads, wraps, sandwiches, homemade cakes, quality coffees & speciality teas.
"We have two key areas of business," says Karen "The lunch rush and corporate catering. Leatherhead is home to an array of offices and business parks so we get a lot of customers grabbing their lunch, as well as companies ordering-in for meetings. The challenge is maintaining a fresh menu that appeals, whilst being time and cost effective. Leatherhead is full of competition, so we're keen to stay one step ahead!"
With an established customer base to keep impressed, Karen welcomed the opportunity to trial Jus-Rol's Shape It Up menu ideas. Using Jus-Rol's pre-rolled Puff Pastry Shapes, Karen tried and tested 9 recipes including Goats Cheese & Aubergine Windmills and Caramelised Peach Tarts. "Previously I would never have considered introducing homemade pastry dishes to the menu but I found Jus-Rol's Puff Pastry Shapes easy to use with consistent results. The recipes are quick to turnaround, there was no wastage and because the pastry comes frozen we didn't have to worry about it drying out."
The new menu offerings were popular with the Soulinnis' customers too, "I had great feedback from my regulars and my corporate clients. They really enjoyed the new dishes and several of my regulars commented that they found them a nice change from having a sandwich. One customer commented on how light the pastry was compared to pastries she had tried elsewhere!"
Following the success of the trial Karen is now considering having the shapes as a permanent fixture on her menus. "I can see them being an excellent addition to our current menu, especially for our corporate clients."
Jus-Rol's Puff Pastry Shapes are available in round, square and oval formats and for Karen they've brought a new approach to pastry recipes, "We are feeling inspired about what we can do with our menu. The trial has enlightened us to the possibilities of using pastry, and has made us realise just how versatile
this product is. I would recommend them to any café operator who wants to put something a little different on their menu."
